This hike is challenging and designed for participants with previous experience of hiking in the high mountains. A good physical level is required as we will climb 800 m of positive elevation gain over a 10 km distance. The iconic hotel and the shrine that hosts the Virgin of Nuria will suddenly appear as we finally enter the green valley. Our explorations will continue with a refreshing stop at the local sacred spring Font de Sant Gil. After visiting the Nuria Shrine we will hop on the rack railway train that will take us back to Queralbs. Due to the high mountain environment, all participants are required to wear hiking boots and come prepared for any sudden change of weather.

DESCRIPTION After about a two hour drive on a comfortable AC Minivan, we will arrive at the charming village of Queralbs, the gateway to Vall del Freser, at the hearth of the Catalan Pyrenees. We will hike at the "Gorgues del Freser” trail, located at the Capçaleres del Ter i el Freser Natural Park protected area. The route passes through singular places like the spectacular waterfall “Salt del Grill” and provides beautiful views of the valley. You will learn about the distinctive flora and fauna of the Pyrenees and, if lucky, you will see some wild animals in their natural habitat. On warm days you will also be able to refresh yourself in the natural river pools along the route.

Along the way, you will pass through the Montseny Natural Park, a vast biosphere reserve, and the historic city of Vic, known for its Roman origins and medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. The route continues through Ripoll, home to a monastery founded in 879 and considered the birthplace of Catalonia. You will then reach Queralbs, a picturesque stone village at 1,236 meters above sea level, with just over 100 residents. Here, you can admire Romanesque churches dating back to the 10th and 12th centuries. Then you will board the cogwheel train for a spectacular 12.5 km ascent to the Sanctuary of Núria, located at 2,000 meters and surrounded by peaks nearing 3,000 meters. At Núria, enjoy free time to relax, take scenic walks, and ride the Coma del Clot cable car. In the afternoon, return by rack railway to Queralbs and head back to Barcelona by private vehicle.
