Monastery of St. Simeon

On the west bank of the Nile in Aswan, the desert meets the water's edge, offering little in terms of development. However, a ferry ride across the river unveils small yet compelling attractions. The Monastery of St. Simeon, dating back to the 7th century, was established by Coptic monks seeking solace in the desert's tranquility. Despite its abandonment in the 13th century, the monastery stands remarkably intact, surrounded by sturdy walls that once shielded the monks from Bedouin raiders and other perils. Its formidable stone and mudbrick structures resemble a medieval fortress, evoking a sense of awe upon approach. Within the compound lie the remnants of a church, a stable, and other essential buildings that sustained the modest lifestyles of the medieval monks.
