La Domus Aurea faisait partie du projet de Néron visant à transformer Rome en une nouvelle « nécropole » suivant le modèle hellénistique, à l'instar d'Alexandrie : une ville à plan orthogonal, avec des places et de larges rues rectilignes. C'est dans cet esprit que, 60 ans plus tard, l'empereur Hadrien fit construire la gigantesque Villa Tiburtina à 30 km de Rome. La grotte était recouverte de figures peintes. L'information se répandit rapidement et de jeunes artistes romains s'y engouffrèrent pour admirer les magnifiques fresques antiques. Aujourd'hui décolorées, ces fresques furent étudiées par des artistes de la Renaissance tels que Michel-Ange et Raphaël. Raphaël s'inspira même des fresques de la Domus Aurea pour la réalisation de la Loggia du Vatican. La découverte de ces peintures donna naissance au terme artistique « grotesque ».
