Historical Village of Hokkaido (Kaitaku-no Mura)
The Historical Village of Hokkaido (Kaitaku no Mura) is an open-air museum recreating the island’s pioneering era. Created to preserve the legacy of development in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it lets visitors step back in time and experience Japan’s frontier history.
Over 50 relocated or reconstructed buildings stand on the grounds. Government offices, schools, shops, farmhouses, and even a horse-drawn railway show how settlers transformed Hokkaido into Japan’s northern frontier. Walking the streets feels like entering a living “Japanese Western.”
The Village highlights the struggles and successes of early settlers under the Meiji government and Kaitakushi. Their efforts to farm, build industries, and form communities shaped modern Hokkaido.
Beyond the preserved buildings, the site invites reflection on pioneer resilience, cultural change, and the impact on the Ainu. It is one of the best places to grasp Japan’s frontier spirit and Hokkaido’s unique culture.
