It is known as the culmination of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route and the supposed burial site of the biblical apostle Saint James. His remains are found in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, consecrated in 1211, whose elaborately carved stone facades open onto large squares within the old city's medieval walls.
