A monumental neoclassical square that the Nazis turned into a stone parade ground and cult site for their movement. The ruined bases of two honour temples still survive on its eastern edge as silent witnesses to that history.
10 minutes
2
NS-Dokumentationszentrum Muenchen
A stark white cube on Brienner Strasse, Munich's documentation and learning centre on National Socialism. It stands on the exact ground where the "Braunes Haus", the national headquarters of the Nazi Party, once rose.
10 minutes
3
Odeonsplatz
An elegant Italianate loggia at the head of Odeonsplatz, modelled on Florence's Loggia dei Lanzi. Here, on 9 November 1923, a gunfight ended Hitler's Beer Hall Putsch, and the Nazis later turned the hall into a shrine guarded day and night by the SS.
10 minutes
4
Viscardigasse
A narrow lane behind the Feldherrnhalle where ordinary Münchner slipped away to avoid the compulsory Hitler salute. A winding line of bronze cobblestones now traces their quiet path of refusal.
10 minutes
5
Staatliches Hofbrauhaus
Munich's most famous beer hall, founded as a ducal brewery in 1589, became one of the early stages of the Nazi movement. In its festival hall on 24 February 1920, Hitler proclaimed the party's twenty five point programme to a mass meeting.
10 minutes
6
Sterneckerbräu
A modest corner building in the Tal where the German Workers' Party held its weekly meetings and opened its first tiny office. It was here, in September 1919, that Adolf Hitler joined the party that would become the NSDAP.
10 minutes
7
Old Town Hall
The graceful Gothic council hall on Marienplatz where, on the night of 9 November 1938, Joseph Goebbels delivered the speech that unleashed the Kristallnacht pogrom across Germany. A place of civic beauty turned, for one evening, into the cradle of organised terror.
10 minutes
8
Marienplatz
Munich's central square and civic heart, watched over by the golden Madonna of the Mariensäule. Beneath its festive surface lies a darker memory, for these same stones once carried Nazi banners, marching columns, and the propaganda of a regime that called this city its capital.
