The construction of the Plaza Independencia in the space occupied by the old Citadel was an idea carried out by the architect Carlo Zucchi in 1837, when it was decided to expand the old colonial city, as part of a general planning plan.
We will report why they are ornamented with 33 palm trees, in homage to the Thirty-Three Orientals who participated in the Liberation Crusade. From the Plaza we can appreciate the Palacio Salvo, the Solis Theater, the Executive Tower, the Estevez Palace and the old Puerta de la Ciudadela.

Sofitel Montevideo Casino
The neighborhood became the most luxurious residential area in the city, where the upper class of the city largely lives. In the north Pierre Durandeau planted thousands of trees and developed the current Rivera Park. Carrasco spread to the exclusive area of Miramar, where a large hotel now converted into the Naval School operated, and to the north in popular and industrial neighborhoods such as Carrasco Norte and Paso Carrasco.
La Rambla de Montevideo finds in Carrasco one of its most successful manifestations from the landscape point of view.
