Explore Whitehorse’s Miles Canyon on a self-guided audio nature tour that plays through your smartphone. Across 19 GPS-triggered stops on the 4.5-kilometre Lower Canyon City Trail, discover the Yukon River, Miles Canyon’s basalt geology, local plants and wildlife, First Nations connections, Gold Rush travel, sternwheelers and the remains of historic Canyon City. Download the tour over Wi-Fi before you begin, then hike without using mobile data. Allow about two hours, or take longer for riverside breaks and photos. The route returns to the Miles Canyon area and includes uneven ground, roots and moderately steep sections. There is no group, fixed departure time or in-person guide. We will depart the boat launch on Schwatka Lake and boat upstream through the amazing basalt cliffs of Miles Canyon, past Canyon City, and on up the blue-green headwaters of the incredible Yukon River. See bears, moose, loons, beavers and more from the boat and watch the city disappear behind us; it will quickly become apparent why Whitehorse is known as “The Wilderness City!” Bottled water included. The boat is an 18 ft Alumarine, Canadian made and very rugged. Perfect for the Yukon River, nimble and able to handle all water conditions. NOTE: This tour is generally private and start times are flexible. The company is very small and often tours will only be available in the evening, to accommodate a full day of fishing during the day. Morning and early afternoon bookings may be possible, but the start time may be delayed to the evening if required to accommodate a full day of work! Your understanding is appreciated.
