Here, George Washington envisioned industry, Thomas Jefferson admired nature, and Meriwether Lewis prepared for a journey that would change a nation. It is also the stage of John Brown’s raid, Civil War strategy under Stonewall Jackson, and the fight for equality led by voices like Frederick Douglass and W. E. B. Du Bois.
