Tirana is one of the most interesting cities in the Balkan Peninsula thanks to its fascinating history. The town was nominated capital of Albania only in 1920, and, before that year, it was nothing more than a large hamlet. From 1944 to 1990, Tirana (and the rest of Albania) suffered a period of isolation during the Communist regime. Still today, traces of this historical period can be found in different areas of Tirana. We will also use cable car to enjoy the view of the whole city from an altitude of over 1000 meters above sea level on Dajti Mountain. This is a flexible day trip, built around lunch at one of our favourite village restaurants! In the morning you have the option to stop at Bunk'Art 1 (tickets approx €5), and to take the Dajti Ekspres cable car up Mt Dajti (approx €8; the minivan comes up by road). If you choose, you can also climb to the peak of Mt Dajti (about 1h up, and 45 minutes down). From Dajti we'll drive on through beautiful countryside to our lunch stop, a small wooden shack owned by the lovely Dëfrim and Hilda. Nowadays most village restaurant close to Tirana have been refurbished to a gangster aesthetic, but Dëfrim and Hilda keep the place as simple as possible, and let their food do the talking. Veal is the speciality of the house - the cows are raised on Dëfrim's little farm, and cooked in the traditional saç method. If you prefer lamb, goat or chicken, no worries - just give us 48 hours advance notice.
