About
Explore the lanes and stories of one of England’s most atmospheric cities on this Private York Historical Pub Tour — an unforgettable journey through centuries of rebellion, intrigue, ghosts and good cheer.
York is a city layered with history: Roman foundations, Viking streets, medieval walls and Georgian elegance. But some of its most vivid stories are told not in museums — they’re told in its pubs.
On this private walking tour, we visit a hand-picked selection of York’s most historic and characterful taverns.
We begin at the birthplace of Guy Fawkes, the Guy Fawkes Inn, before descending to Roman remains beneath the Roman Bath. Hear ghostly tales inside the famously haunted Golden Fleec...

Itinerary
1
Guy Fawkes Inn
Nestled right across the road from York Minster, the beautiful old traditional Inn has guest rooms upstairs and a lovely old pub downstairs. It was here that the infamous Guy Fawkes was born.... Remember, remember, the fifth of November!
45 minutes
2
York Minster
See one of the greatest places of worship in the world, the wonderful York Minster.
3
The Roman Bath
What makes this pub extra special isn't just what's inside but what lies beneath! How many pubs can you visit with a 2nd century Roman bath house in the cellar?
45 minutes
4
The Shambles
a famous, incredibly well-preserved medieval street renowned for its narrow, timber-framed buildings with jettied upper floors that nearly touch across the cobbles. Formerly a street of butchers' shops ("flesh shambles"), it is now a top tourist attraction known for its Harry Potter-like atmosphere, often cited as inspiration for Diagon Alley but it's so much more than that.
10 minutes
5
The Golden Fleece
Lots of pubs in Britain have ghosts but not many have as many documented ghosts as the Golden Fleece. Who knows who we might bump into!
45 minutes
6
Blue Boar
There has been a Blue Boar since Medieval times and despite connections with royalty, it is perhaps most famous for it being where the body of legendary Highwayman Dick Turpin was on display following his execution. We might even see his coffin!
45 minutes
7
The Kings Arms Pub
Standing right next to the famous River Ouse, the old Viking highway. This wonderful old pub holds the distinction of being the most flooded pub in York. Usually around 4 times a year.
