Groot Drakenstein Prison
This was formerly known as Victor Verster. This prison was home to late Nelson Mandela for the last 14 months of his long political imprisonment. Described by Mandeka as a'gilded cage, his time at this prison was a combination of luxury and confinement. Mandela was not given a cell while being in prison here, but a comfortable Villa, with numerous bedrooms, a swimming pool, a personal chef and a view of the breathtaking Drakenstein Mountains
This was his last imprisonment, before he became a free man in February 1990. The Sexwhale family foundation commissioned a Long walk to Freedom statue on honor of Nelson Mandela
