L'État de la Cité du Vatican, également connu simplement sous le nom de Vatican, est devenu indépendant de l'Italie avec le traité du Latran (1929), et c'est un territoire distinct sous « la pleine propriété, la domination exclusive et l'autorité et la juridiction souveraines » du Saint-Siège, lui-même une entité souveraine de droit international, qui maintient l'indépendance temporelle, diplomatique et spirituelle de la cité-État. Avec une superficie de 49 hectares et une population d'environ 825 habitants, c'est le plus petit État du monde en termes de superficie et de population.
