Since its inception by the warrior Ame Pal in 1380; the walled city of Lo Manthang along with the ancient realm of Upper Mustang was segregated from the rest of the world from the 14th century. Though limited access was granted to the Nepalese, it was still forbidden for outsiders until 1992. Consequently, this territory gained the opportunity to gradually develop and preserve its contrasting culture and classic traditions that share similarities with Tibet.
