Oaxaca has a living history that most tours skip entirely. This 3-hour walking experience traces the city’s long history of resistance. As we walk, we’ll weave the story of the 2006 APPO uprising into Oaxaca’s broader history; from pre-Hispanic times and the arrival of the Spanish to colonial rule, the influence of the Catholic Church and religious orders, the Reform era, and modern Oaxaca.
By connecting these events, we’ll see how centuries of social, political, and economic tensions came together in a “perfect storm,” giving rise to one of the most significant social movements in Oaxaca’s history. You’ll walk the streets where teachers built barricades and protesters occupied the city.
