Platteklip Gorge (("Flat Stone" in Afrikaans) is the most popular and direct hiking route up Table Mountain and has become known as the "Stairway to Heaven". While it is the shortest route to the summit, the hike is challenging, gaining approximately 650 metres in elevation over less than 3 kilometres. This classic Table Mountain hike begins beneath the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway and steadily ascends to the contour path. The hike then follows a scenic trail along the slopes of the Mountain, offering beautiful views of the city and surrounding landscape before joining the Platteklip Gorge hiking trail.
