Acropolis
The Acropolis of Athens is the most important ancient monument in Greece and a symbol of classical civilization.
The site has been inhabited since prehistoric times, but it reached its peak during the 5th century BC, the Golden Age of Athens under the leadership of Pericles. After the Persian destruction of Athens in 480 BC, a massive rebuilding program was launched, resulting in the construction of the monuments we see today.
The most famous building on the Acropolis is the Parthenon, a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena Parthenos, protector of the city. It was designed by the architects Iktinos and Kallikrates, with sculptures supervised by Phidias.
Other important monuments include the Erechtheion, famous for its Caryatids, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the monumental entrance known as the Propylaea.
Today, the Acropolis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most visited archaeological sites in the world, representing the cultural and historical legacy of ancient Greece.
