Nagahama Castle Ruins
The site of Nagahama Castle is remembered as the first domain of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, later known as one of Japan’s great unifiers. Although the original castle no longer stands, the grounds still preserve key markers such as the remains of the horse stables and statues honoring Hideyoshi. Here, visitors can imagine the moment when a once low-ranking retainer of Oda Nobunaga began his extraordinary rise to power. Walking the castle grounds evokes the ambition and political struggles of the Sengoku era, offering a glimpse into how this castle became a symbol of transformation in Japanese history.

Nagahama Castle Historical Museum
Standing on the site of the original keep, the Nagahama Castle Historical Museum introduces visitors to the world of samurai politics and battles in the Ōmi and Hokoku regions. Exhibits showcase artifacts, reconstructions, and stories from the turbulent Sengoku period, highlighting the strategies and ambitions that shaped central Japan. The rooftop observation deck provides sweeping views of Lake Biwa and surrounding battlefields, allowing guests to connect geography with history as they learn about the struggles that determined Japan’s future. More than a museum, it is a place where the rise of Hideyoshi and the spirit of the Warring States era can still be felt.
