Itinerary
1
100 Ren Min Da Dao
Opposite you stands the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre, a museum entirely dedicated to the city and its future. This bright building, with a magnolia flower roof, was designed by architect Ling Benli and inaugurated in 2000.
2
Heping Fandian
At the corner of the Bund and Nanjing Road stands one of Shanghai’s most famous symbols: the Peace Hotel, or He Ping Fan Dian. With its green copper arrow and Art Deco granite facade, it embodies the elegance and modernity of 1930s Shanghai.
3
HSBC Building, the Bund
You are in front of one of the Bund’s most majestic buildings: the former HSBC headquarters, Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. Built between 1921 and 1923 by British architects Palmer & Turner, it was considered the most luxurious building in all of Asia.
4
Yuyuan Old Street
Here, the atmosphere changes. The air embalms the incense, the roofs rise in elegant curves, and all around, the Ming and Qing style facades plunge the visitor into another era.
5
People’s Square
Welcome to People’s Square, the beating heart of Shanghai. You are here in the center of the city, a place where history, culture and daily life intersect. Before being this large open and modern plaza, this place was a racetrack.
6
Shanghai Poly Grand Theatre
You are in front of Shanghai Grand Theatre, Shanghai Dàjùyuàn, one of the most prestigious cultural symbols of the city. Located in People's Square, it embodies the meeting between Chinese tradition and modernity.
7
City Hotel Shanghai
This imposing building, with its clear facade and clean lines, embodies the power and modernity of Shanghai. This is the City Inn. Designed by the Japanese architect Kenzō Tange, one of the great masters of 20th century urban planning, it was completed in 1995.
8
Madame Tussauds Shanghai
Perched on the tenth floor of New World City, a stone’s throw from People’s Square, Madame Tussauds Shanghai is much more than a wax museum: it’s a real celebrity scene.
9
Nanjing Lu (Nanjing Road)
This is Nanjing Road, one of the most famous avenues in all of China. It stretches for more than five kilometres, from the Bund to the Jing’an Temple, and embodies the spirit of Shanghai: a fascinating blend of history, modernity and urban energy.
10
Shanghai
Shanghai is a city that embodies all of China’s modern history. Located at the mouth of the Yangzi River on the banks of the Huangpu, it was still, at the beginning of the 19th century, only a small fishing port and local trade.
11
Nanjinglu Street
Walking along Nanjing Road, amid the bright signs and lively display cases, you will encounter several bronze sculptures that often catch the eye of passers-by. Among them, one of the most emblematic is that of a mother and her child, placed directly on the pedestrian street, between Place du Peuple and Bund.
12
Chen Y i Square
You are here in Chen Yi Square, one of the iconic spaces of the Bund. Facing you, the bronze statue of Marshal Chen Yi stands in a calm and solemn posture, facing the Huangpu River and the modern city of Pudong. This orientation is no coincidence: it symbolizes a statesman’s vision of Shanghai’s future.
13
The Bund
You walk to one of China’s most iconic places: the Bund, the long promenade along the Huangpu River.
14
Shanghai Custom House
In front of you stands one of the Bund’s most recognizable symbols: the Shanghai Customs House, or Customs Building.
15
South Bund Soft Spinning Material Market
Before you stands the Bund Bull, one of Shanghai’s most famous modern symbols. This imposing bronze sculpture, more than three meters high and weighing six tons, was created by the Italian-American sculptor Arturo Di Modica, the same artist as that of the Wall Street Charging Bull.
16
Pudong
Across the Huangpu River lies one of the most famous panoramas in the world: the Pudong skyline.
17
Bund Sightseeing Tunnel
Beneath your feet is one of Shanghai’s most unusual passageways: the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel. This tunnel connects the two faces of the city — the Bund, witness to the colonial past, and Pudong, symbol of futuristic Shanghai that you see shining across the Huangpu River.
18
Sky SOHO
In front of you, the futuristic lines and sculpted volumes of glass and steel are not mere buildings: they are creations of the SOHO China Group, one of the most iconic real estate developers in the country.
19
Shanghai
Here, the cuisine reflects all the diversity and energy of the city: a tasty mix of regional traditions, foreign influences and contemporary creativity.
20
Former French Concession
You are at the heart of the former French Concession in Shanghai. Born in 1849 as a foreign enclave, it became, a century later, one of the most elegant and emblematic neighborhoods of the city. Here, every street seems to murmur a fragment of history.
21
Shanghai Concert Hall
Opposite you stands one of Shanghai’s most iconic cultural monuments: Shanghai Concert Hall. Its elegant façade, inspired by classical European architecture, evokes the golden age of the 1930s, when the city was already a vibrant cosmopolitan center.
22
Gucheng Park
You are here in a rare place in Shanghai: a space where calm, history and modernity meet. Gucheng Park, or Old City Park, was built in 2002 on the site of the ancient Shanghai Walls, erected during the Ming Dynasty.
