Step beneath the rooftop bars of downtown San Diego and into the rowdiest chapter of the city's past. This small-group Gaslamp Quarter history walk is led by a local storyteller who brings the notorious "Stingaree" red-light district back to life — from Wyatt Earp's gambling halls and the saloon where he ran his Oyster Bar, to madam Ida Bailey's scandalous Canary Cottage and the dramatic 1912 raid that shut it all down. You'll see the Gaslamp's best Victorian landmarks — the Louis Bank of Commerce, the 1882 Yuma Building, the Horton Grand Hotel where Earp lived, and the oldest house downtown — plus a photo stop at the iconic neon Gaslamp archway. Itinéraire
1
Quartier Gaslamp
The Gaslamp Quarter is the historic heart of downtown San Diego — a 16-block National Historic District packed with more than 90 beautifully preserved Victorian-era buildings, now home to the city's best dining, rooftop bars, and nightlife. Once the rowdy "Stingaree" red-light district, today it's San Diego's most walkable showcase of 19th-century architecture and frontier history.
15 minutes
2
Horton Plaza Park
Horton Plaza Park is the open public square at the gateway to the Gaslamp Quarter, anchored by the ornate Broadway Fountain. Designed by architect Irving Gill and unveiled in 1910, it was the first fountain in the United States lit by electricity. A favorite San Diego meeting spot and photo stop, the park sits steps from the historic U.S. Grant Hotel.
15 minutes
3
Historic Louis Bank of Commerce
The Louis Bank of Commerce is one of the most photographed Victorian buildings in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter — a four-story 1888 Baroque Revival landmark crowned with twin towers. Once San Diego's first granite building, its ground floor housed the famous Oyster Bar where gunfighter Wyatt Earp ran one of his downtown gambling halls.
15 minutes
4
Bâtiment Yuma
The Yuma Building is a striking 1882 Italianate landmark in the Gaslamp Quarter and one of downtown San Diego's first fireproof brick structures. Its terracotta facade and elegant detailing make it a favorite stop on any Gaslamp history tour — and it played a starring role in the dramatic 1912 raid that finally shut down the Stingaree red-light district.

5
Gaslamp Museum at the Davis-Horton House
The Gaslamp Museum at the Davis-Horton House is the oldest surviving structure in downtown San Diego, dating to the early 1850s. Once home to city founders William Heath Davis and Alonzo Horton, this saltbox-style house now operates as a museum telling the story of San Diego's birth — the tangible link to where the Gaslamp Quarter began.
15 minutes
6
Horton Grand Hôtel
The Horton Grand Hotel is a beautifully restored Victorian hotel in the heart of San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter, recreated from two 1880s landmark hotels. Legendary lawman and gambler Wyatt Earp lived here for some seven years, and later guests included Babe Ruth and boxing greats — making it one of downtown's most storied historic addresses.

7
Théâtre Balboa
The Balboa Theatre is a glorious 1924 Spanish Renaissance landmark on Fourth Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter, famous for its tiled dome, twin ornamental waterfalls, and lavish interior. Lovingly restored as a downtown San Diego performing-arts venue, it's a stunning example of the architecture that the quarter's 1970s preservation movement saved from the wrecking ball.
