Step into the fascinating story of Castel Sant’Angelo, one of Rome’s most remarkable landmarks. Built in the 2nd century AD by Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for his family, it later became a fortress, papal residence, prison, and museum. Its name comes from a legend from 590, when Pope Gregory the Great is said to have seen the Archangel Michael sheathing his sword, symbolizing the end of the plague. Its strategic location near St. Peter’s Basilica made it deeply connected to the history of the papacy. Over the centuries, powerful popes transformed the fortress, adding imposing walls and grand interiors. From the 17th century, it became mainly a political prison, before opening as a Nationa...

Entering Castel Sant’Angelo, you pass through the Dromos and Atrium, spaces that reveal the monument’s original identity as the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian. The Dromos served as the monumental approach to the tomb, leading visitors toward the central Atrium. Imagine entering this impressive passage almost 2,000 years ago, when the building was a grand imperial mausoleum rather than the fortress we know today. These ancient spaces offer a fascinating glimpse into the monument’s Roman origins and the grandeur of Hadrian’s vision.

Museo Nazionale di Castel Sant'Angelo
Castel Sant’Angelo is one of Rome’s most fascinating monuments, combining the history of an imperial mausoleum, a fortified residence, a prison, and a museum. Built in the 2nd century AD by Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family, it was later incorporated into Rome’s defensive walls and transformed into a fortress known as Castellum. Its name recalls the legend of 590, when Pope Gregory the Great saw the Archangel Michael sheathing his sword, symbolizing the end of the plague. Its strategic position near St. Peter’s Basilica made it closely connected to the papacy. Over the centuries, it was strengthened with bastions and walls and transformed into a magnificent papal residence, reaching its greatest splendor under Paul III. From the 17th century, it became mainly a political prison. After becoming part of the Italian State in 1870, it served as a military prison and barracks before becoming a National Museum in 1925.

As you continue through Castel Sant’Angelo, the Rampa Elicoidale takes you deep into the heart of the ancient monument. This remarkable spiral passage was built as part of Emperor Hadrian’s original mausoleum, allowing access between its different levels. Walking along its gently curving path, you can almost imagine the grand funerary procession that once moved through these walls. Over the centuries, the ramp adapted to the castle’s changing role, becoming part of the route through the fortress and papal residence. Today, it offers a unique journey through nearly two thousand years of Roman history.
