One of the largest fortified castles west of the Rhine is Vianden Castle. The castle was erected in the Romanesque style from the 11th to 14th centuries, with antecedents reaching back to the 10th century. At the conclusion of this period, Gothic modifications and embellishments were introduced. In the 17th century, a Renaissance palace was erected, but the castle was thereafter abandoned. It has lately been totally repaired and is now available to the public. (Outside Visit)
