Monastery of Alcobaca
The Monastery of Alcobaça was one of the first Cistercian monastic establishments in Portuguese territory, and became the main house of this religious Order, thanks to a continued policy of royal protection. The medieval buildings still preserved make the Alcobaça Monastery unique in the world, to which the later buildings, from the 16th to the 18th centuries, add, as an important testament to the evolution of Portuguese architecture, inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List
