Your first stop is the renowned Egyptian Museum, also known as the Museum of Cairo. While you'll get to see a representative selection on display, there's even more stored away in the museum's storerooms. Built-in 1901 by the Italian construction company Garozzo-Zaffarani, following a design by the French architect Marcel Dourgnon, this edifice stands as one of the region's largest museums. As of March 2019, the museum is open to the public, but it's worth noting that a new Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza is set to take its place in 2020.

This area includes the Babylon Fortress, the Hanging Church, the Greek Church of St. George, and numerous other Coptic churches and historical landmarks. Coptic Cairo remained a stronghold for Christianity in Egypt until the Islamic era, and many of the current church buildings were constructed after the Muslim conquest in the 7th century.
