La statue a été construite en 1927 et consacrée le 30 octobre 1927. Financée par l'avocat local Aires de Ornelas et son épouse, elle a été réalisée par les artistes français Georges Serraz et Pierre Charles Lenoir. Elle a été achevée quatre ans avant la statue du Christ Rédempteur au Brésil.
