Rila Monastery
Founded in the 10th century by St. Ivan of Rila, the UNESCO-listed Rila Monastery is Bulgaria’s largest Orthodox sanctuary. Tucked deep in the Rila Mountains, its fortress-like stone walls enclose a courtyard surrounded by striking black-and-white striped balconies. At the center sits the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin, famous for its vibrant 19th-century frescoes and intricate golden iconostasis. The complex also houses Hreljo’s Tower, built in 1335 as a defensive shelter, and a museum featuring Raphael’s Cross, a single piece of wood carved with over 600 tiny biblical figures.

Boyana Church
Located at the foot of Mount Vitosha in Sofia, the UNESCO-listed Boyana Church is a world-renowned medieval Orthodox site famous for its magnificent 13th-century frescoes. Built in three distinct phases between the 11th and 19th centuries, the church owes its acclaim to master wall paintings executed in 1259 under Sebastocrator Kaloyan. These remarkably preserved artworks are celebrated as early precursors to the European Renaissance, standing out for their realistic human expression, psychological depth, and striking portraits of Bulgarian rulers and saints.
