Yu Garden (Yuyuan)
Constructed in the Ming Dynasty over 460 years ago, Yuyuan Garden is a masterpiece of classical Jiangnan private garden architecture. Built by an official for his ageing parents, its name means “Garden of Peace and Joy”. Visitors can appreciate delicate rockeries, winding corridors, serene ponds and elegant ancient pavilions. Nestled in Shanghai’s old town, it perfectly embodies the traditional Chinese design philosophy of “seeing grand scenery within a small space”.
