Porto is a hard grey city that says everything on its surfaces. This walk reads the whole historic centre as one descent, from the baroque tower and blue-tiled upper town down the granite hill to the working river and the iron bridge that finally crossed it.
Across 12 stops you take in the icons and the backstreets: the Clérigos tower, the Livraria Lello, the tiled Carmo, a viewpoint over the old Jewish quarter, the São Bento station hall of 20,000 tiles, the fortress cathedral where Porto began, a gold-drowned church, the merchants' stock-exchange palace, the UNESCO Ribeira quay that gave Portugal its name, and the Dom Luís bridge.

Luís I Bridge
The tour ends at the Ponte Dom Luís I, the great iron bridge over the Douro. From here you are on the Ribeira waterfront, with cafes, the Gaia port-wine lodges across the bridge, and transport nearby.
Porto's 75-metre baroque bell tower by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, long the symbol of the city. Climb its 240 steps for the view over the whole descent ahead.
