Pompeii is one of Italy’s most stunning archaeological sites, an open-air museum where visitors can step back over 2,000 years and explore a city buried in ash until 1748. Herculaneum, Pompeii’s smaller sister, is a treasure of perfectly preserved patrician villas, brickwork, mosaics, frescoes, and even ancient wood and ropes, surviving 500°C volcanic flows. After a morning among these culturally rich ruins, relax at a vineyard producing Lacryma Christi, “Tear of Christ,” with breathtaking views of Mount Vesuvius. Enjoy a leisurely lunch and wine tasting, gazing at Vesuvio as the ancient inhabitants once did.
