Drummond Gardens
Drummond Castle Gardens, nestled near Crieff in Perthshire, Scotland, are celebrated as one of Europe’s most exquisite formal gardens. Their rich history, intricate design, and cinematic allure make them a must-visit destination for garden enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
Established in the early 17th century by John Drummond, 2nd Earl of Perth, the gardens underwent significant transformations over the centuries. In the 19th century, under the guidance of landscape gardener Lewis Kennedy—formerly of Empress Josephine’s Malmaison—the gardens were redesigned to reflect a blend of French and Italian styles. Queen Victoria’s visit in 1842 further cemented their prestige, commemorated by the planting of two copper beech trees that still grace the grounds today.
The gardens are renowned for their symmetrical parterre, forming a St Andrew’s Cross at its heart, centered around a 17th-century obelisk sundial crafted by master mason John Mylne. This sundial, with its 61 faces.
