Jama Masjid
Overview
The Jama Masjid of Delhi, officially known as Masjid-i Jahan-Numa, is one of the grandest mosques ever built in India and a timeless masterpiece of Mughal architecture. It stands majestically in the heart of Old Delhi, opposite the Red Fort, and remains one of the most important centers of Islamic faith in the country.
Commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan, the builder of the Taj Mahal, the mosque was constructed between 1650 and 1656 AD under the supervision of architect Ustad Khalil. It took over 5,000 artisans six years to complete this architectural marvel, at a cost of 10 lakh rupees at that time.
