Olbia
Olbia is the gateway to Sardinia and the economic heart of Gallura. Strolling through the city, visitors can uncover traces of its millennia-old past, from the Archaeological Museum on Peddone islet, home to nearly 900 gold coins, to the Punic-Roman necropolis with 450 tombs, now preserved at the museum near the majestic Basilica of San Simplicio, the island’s oldest Christian monument dating back to the 11th–12th centuries. From the 7th century BCE, Phoenicians and Greeks frequented the area, while Punic and later Roman settlements left fortified walls, paved streets, baths, and villas, including the ruins of S’Imbalconadu. Today, the city opens onto the stunning gulf protecting Tavolara’s marine area and offering access to the exclusive Costa Smeralda.
