Sainte-Mere-Eglise
Discover Sainte-Mère-Église, a town in Normandy, was one of the first liberated during the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944. U.S. 82nd Airborne Division paratroopers landed in the area, some unintentionally dropping into the town itself.
A famous event involved paratrooper John Steele, whose parachute snagged on the church steeple; he pretended to be dead before escaping German capture. After fierce fighting, the Allies secured the town by morning.
Today, Sainte-Mère-Église symbolizes D-Day bravery, with tributes like a parachute on the church and museums honoring the liberation.
