The visitor experience uses displays, original objects and a detailed battlefield model to explain the people, strategy and wider significance of the battle. Standing above the River Boyne between Tara and Trim, Bective Abbey is one of the valley’s most atmospheric medieval ruins. Founded for the Cistercian Order in 1147, it developed from a place of monastic simplicity into a fortified religious complex. Its surviving cloister, Gothic arches, towers and carved stonework reveal how the abbey evolved across several centuries. The dramatic ruins have also appeared in major international productions, including Braveheart and The Last Duel. Bective may be included as a peaceful photographic and historical stop when the chosen route and available time permit.

Trim Castle is the largest Anglo-Norman fortification in Ireland and one of the most impressive medieval castles in the country. Constructed by Hugh de Lacy and his successors over approximately 30 years, the castle was designed to control an important crossing point on the River Boyne and demonstrate Norman power in medieval Meath. Its monumental 20-sided keep stands behind curtain walls, defensive towers and the remains of a surrounding moat.
