Baekryeonsa Temple, also known as the White Lotus Temple takes its name from the surrounding peaks of Mt. Chuknyeong, Mt. Seori, Mt. Unak, and Mt. Cheonma, which together resemble a white lotus flower embracing the temple grounds.
Baekryeonsa offers a tranquil retreat from the city and a rare opportunity to experience Korean Buddhist culture in a serene natural setting. Unlike most traditional Korean temples, its buildings are intentionally left unpainted, without the colorful dancheong patterns commonly found on temple architecture, creating a simple and calming atmosphere.
Established in 1997, Baekryeonsa is part of the Jogye Order, the largest Buddhist order in Korea, and serves as a branch temple of Bongseonsa Temple. Visitors can also admire the temple's unique Daeungjeon Hall, which features a rare ceiling artwork depicting the Twelve Buddhas of Karmic Repentance, a sacred installation found in only a handful of temples across Korea.
