Sungnyemun Gate
Sungnyemun, also known as Namdaemun Gate, is one of Seoul’s oldest and most important historical landmarks. Built in the 14th century during the Joseon Dynasty, it originally served as the main southern gate of Seoul’s old city wall.
Today, the gate stands between modern skyscrapers and the busy streets of Namdaemun Market, creating a strong contrast between old and new Seoul. While the area around it has rapidly modernized, the nearby market still preserves the atmosphere of hardworking local merchants, small family businesses and traditional market culture that shaped everyday Korean life for generations.
3
Seoullo 7017
Seoullo 7017 is a modern elevated walkway built on a former highway near Seoul Station and Namdaemun Market. Similar to New York’s High Line, it was transformed into a pedestrian space filled with plants, cafes and city viewpoints.
As we pass by Seoullo, we talk about Seoul’s rapid modernization and how the city constantly rebuilds and reinvents itself while older traditional areas like Namdaemun Market continue to survive beside it.
