The Château de Vincennes is a must see in the Paris region.
Its history began in the 12th century, when Louis VII decided to build a hunting lodge in the forest of Vincennes. It was under Louis IX that the Château officially became a royal residence.
In the 14th century, the Château assumed the appearance we know today: King Charles V decided to build a vast wall, towers and an over 50-metre tall keep, today considered to be the tallest medieval fortified building in Europe. He also started construction work on the Sainte-Chapelle in 1379, which was not completed until 1552 under the reign of Henri II.

Chateau of Vincennes
A symbol of the modern French state. The building affirms the power of the monarchy: it guarded the capital, whilst at the same time protecting the kings against uprisings. It was at the heart of the French monarchy until 1682, when Louis XIV chose to settle in Versailles. The keep was used as a prison from the 16th up to the 19th century: Fouquet, the Marquis de Sade, and Mirabeau were held here. Under Napoleon I it was transformed into a barracks and arsenal, and the fortress protected Paris during invasions in the 19th century.

Chateau de Blandy-les-Tours
As from 1316, the Viscounts of Melun form an alliance with the Counts of Tancarville. New structural changes followed by several construction campaigns during the 14th century transform the old stronghold into the fortified castle we know today.
According to the desire of the Counts of Tancarville, Blandy becomes a place of defence as well as a residence at the threshold of the Hundred Years’ War.
