5 Stops
1
Dion Archaeological Park
Your first stop on the slopes of Mount Olympus is Dion, a key site for the Macedonians. It was here that grand festivals were held in honor of Olympian Zeus and the Pierian Muses, featuring theatrical and gymnastic competitions known as "Olympia ta en Dion," which continued until around 100 B.C. Dion was also the place where Philip II celebrated the capture of Olynthos, the capital of the Chalkidian League, and where Alexander the Great sought the blessings of the king of the gods before embarking on his journey East.

Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai (Vergina)
Next, visit Vergina, the ancient capital of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. Explore the underground museum, which began construction in 1993 and opened in 1997, showcasing four interconnected areas. These include the Palace, the royal burial cluster of the Temenid dynasty (Burial Cluster "C"), the tomb of Philip II, and a gateway entrance featuring a semi-open-air exhibition of sculptures discovered in the city sanctuaries. The museum also includes the restored upper floor of Philip's Palace façade, offering a fascinating glimpse into the grandeur of the past.

The Ancient City of Aiges
Discover Aigai, the ancient first capital of the Kingdom of Macedon, uncovered in the 19th century near Vergina in northern Greece. The city’s most impressive remains include a monumental palace adorned with intricate mosaics and painted stuccoes. The significance of Aigai’s ancient treasures has drawn global attention, and special facilities, including the digital museum “Alexander the Great: From Aigai to Oikoumene”, have been created for visitors. This interactive museum will connect Aigai with other global archaeological sites, showcasing the universal value of this UNESCO Heritage site.
