Guimarães is proudly the cradle of nationality, since in the distant twelfth century, here we gained independence from the kingdom of León, having been established as the capital of the Portucalense County. Since then, the city has maintained its defensive walls, castle, burgh and workers/peasants quarters until the 19th century.
