Yonezawa
Experience the rich tradition of safflower dyeing in Yonezawa, a craft known in Japanese as benibana-zome (紅花染め). This centuries-old technique dates back to the Edo period and involves extracting a vivid red pigment from the petals of the safflower plant (Carthamus tinctorius). The process is meticulous and time-honored: the petals are carefully harvested, dried, and fermented to produce the rare red dye called carthamin, which is then used to color fabrics such as silk and cotton. The resulting shades range from delicate pink to deep crimson, colors that were historically treasured by nobles and samurai. Today, visitors to Yonezawa can witness this traditional craft and appreciate the artistry and cultural heritage behind one of Japan’s most distinctive dyeing techniques.
