From the "miradouro" (viewpoint in Portuguese), your guide will give you an introduction to the city's history. Walking through Bairro Alto, you will discover one of Lisbon's most vibrant and creative neighborhoods. Beyond its lively streets and famous nightlife, Bairro Alto played a crucial role in shaping Lisbon's official and unofficial press. For nearly a century, grand newspapers headquartered in former palaces coexisted with small political publications operating from modest stairwells and aging buildings, making the district the beating heart of Portuguese journalism. As you wander through its narrow streets, you'll learn how the authoritarian Estado Novo regime curtailed freedom of speech and expression, silencing many of the voices that once defined the neighborhood. From the origins of Fado to the cultural movements that followed the Carnation Revolution, Bairro Alto represents a space for creativity, identity, and freedom.

Walking down from Bairro Alto to Chiado, you will pass by the statue of one of the most important Portuguese poets of all times. This stop will be a chance to time travel back to the 16th century, when Portugal begun its maritime expansion which took its people to every corner of the globe.

Chiado: the cultural and commercial heart of the city. Here you will have the change to meet the Portuguese poet and philosopher Fernando Pessoa, who's world entangles voices and points of view into an existentialist masterpiece. Side to side with the poet's statue you will find some of Lisbon's oldest cafés and pastry shops. A few steps down the road you will find the oldest library in the world - awarded a Guidess World Record.

Nestled beneath the ruins of the Carmo Convent, Largo do Carmo is one of Lisbon's most symbolic squares. It was here, on April 25th, 1974, that the dictatorship which had ruled Portugal for nearly five decades finally came to an end. As we stand in this peaceful square today, we'll revisit the remarkable story of the Carnation Revolution—a military coup that became a celebration of freedom, remembered not for bloodshed, but for the flowers placed in soldiers' rifles and the hope of a nation reclaiming its voice.

Walking down from Carmo's square, you will reach the "baixa", lowest part of Lisbon's city center - completely rebuilt after the destructive earthquake of 1755. In Rossio square - officially named Praça Pedro IV - you will have the chance to learn about the many political and geographical changes the Portuguese empire went through during the first decades of the 19th century. From the French invasions to the independence of Brasil and the beginning of the Constitutional Monarchy passing through a war between two brothers and the story of Queen Mary II. In spring, you will be able to enjoy the stunning blooming of Jacaranda threes and enjoy the golden hour reflecting on the limestones.

Time for a break! Here you will toast with a local cherry liquor at one of the city's oldest establishment. This hole in the wall shop is a true gem and familiar stop for the locals at whatever time and day of the week. A sample is included for all guests, following the local law (18+)

Before your last stop, stroll down to the riverside and learn about the Marquese of Pombal and his plan of reconstruction of the city after the catastrophic earthquake of 1755. Baixa is nowadays the most popular and visited street of Lisbon's city center, populated by restaurants and shops, it can feel extremely touristy and overcrowded. For this reason, your guide will focus on highlighting local gems and "lojas com historia" (historical heritage shops).

Rising above Lisbon's maze of streets, the Santa Justa Elevator is a symbol of the city's leap into modernity at the dawn of the 20th century. More than an elegant iron structure, it reflects a time when engineering, innovation, and urban growth were transforming everyday life. From here, we'll take in one of Lisbon's most iconic views while uncovering the stories hidden between the lower city and the hilltops above.

Your journey will end at Praça do Comércio, Lisbon's grand riverside square and the city's historic gateway to the world. Facing the Tagus River, this was where once a Royal palace stood and after the earthquake it became the place where goods from across the oceans arrived.
