Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela
Today you will explore Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches, the most famous of all of Ethiopia’s historic cities. Often referred to as ‘New Jerusalem’ and ‘The Eighth Wonder of the World’, Lalibela's eleven stunning rock-cut churches draw pilgrims worldwide. Built during the 12th and 13th centuries from red volcanic rock, these religious monoliths are a marvel of Christian architecture in Africa. The churches are divided into two groups, each with a unique architectural style. In the morning, visit the Northwestern group including Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel, Bet Danaghel, Bet Mikael, and Bet Golgotha. In the afternoon, explore the second group: Bete Amanuel, Bete Merkorios, Bete Abba Libanos, Bete Gabriel-Rafael, and Bete Giyorgis, Lalibela’s most beautiful church.
