Hikone Castle
In the afternoon, visit Hikone Castle, one of only twelve original castles remaining in Japan and one of just five designated as a National Treasure. Perched on a hill overlooking Lake Biwa, the castle was built in the early 17th century by the powerful Ii Clan, loyal supporters of the Tokugawa Shogunate.
Explore the historic castle grounds with your guide and learn about the samurai lords who helped shape Japan during the Edo Period. Climb to the top of the original wooden castle keep for panoramic views of Lake Biwa, the surrounding castle town, and the mountains beyond. With its preserved architecture, impressive defensive design, and rich samurai history, Hikone Castle offers one of the most authentic castle experiences in Japan.
