At the heart of its unique sound is the Kotsuzumi, a small, hourglass shaped shoulder drum that plays a vital role in shaping the rhythms and atmosphere of the performance. Crafted from cherry wood with black lacquer and gold accents, the drum features horse skin drumheads held in place by hemp cords. The player sits with the drum on their left shoulder, adjusting its pitch by squeezing and releasing the cords while striking the drum with the right hand.

Then, enjoy a live performance by a master Kotsuzumi player, with an interpreter to help you understand the art.
