South Dakota 87
Needles Highway is a section of South Dakota's scenic State Route 87 that winds through the Black Hills area. It was originally created in 1922 by Governor Peter Norbeck, who sought to create a roadway that would allow visitors to see the "Cathedral Spires" of this otherwise inaccessible region. The drive winds through the rugged landscape, offering travelers stunning views of the Needles Eye Tunnel and other rock formations.
