Sasayama Castle Old SIte
Sasayama Castle, built in the early 17th century by the Tokugawa shogunate, served as a strategic stronghold controlling key routes in the Tamba region. Although the original keep no longer stands, the castle’s grand Oshoin Hall has been beautifully reconstructed, offering visitors an impressive look at the formal reception rooms, wide tatami halls, and refined architectural details that once hosted high-ranking officials and lords. Exhibits inside explain the castle’s political role, the domain’s history, and the cultural atmosphere of the Edo period. Walking through the grounds and stone walls surrounding the inner bailey provides a vivid sense of how the castle balanced military defense with administrative power in this historic town.

Anma Family Museum
The Anma Family Samurai Residence is an authentic Edo-period home that once belonged to a mid-ranking samurai family in Sasayama. The house preserves traditional Japanese architectural elements such as tatami rooms, an earthen-floor kitchen, wooden beams, sliding doors, and a small garden, allowing visitors to experience how samurai and their families lived in everyday life. Exhibits display household tools, clothing, and artifacts that reveal the discipline, simplicity, and social structure of samurai society. As one of the best-preserved samurai homes in the area, the residence offers a rare opportunity to step directly into the domestic world of Japan’s warrior class.
