Natural Monument of the Quarry of Campo, Figueiral and Prainha
The Natural Monument contains underwater volcanic rocks and marine fossiliferous sediments, unique in the Azores Archipelago. The sedimentary levels, by their fossiliferous expression and age (about 5 million years old) allow to establish inter-macaroniic and stratigraphic correlations between Macaronesia and the European and African continents, and contribute to the understanding of the geological history of the Northeast Atlantic and of the colonization of the macaronesian islands.
