Herculaneum was an ancient Roman town, situated below Mount Vesuvius, and submerged under a torrent of mud and lava after the volcano erupted in 79 A.D. The buildings have been so well preserved that you can walk down the streets pretty much exactly as the Romans would have done over 2000 years ago! There is still original timber in the buildings and clay pots stored as they would have been at the time of the eruption. Together with your guide, you will visit many of the most important sites, public baths with their well-preserved frescoes and mosaics, shops and the gymnasium. Born in the archaic age and initially affected by an indigenous settlement, the city was subsequently exposed to Samnite, Greek, Etruscan influences, up to the predominant Roman presence, whose civilization is today witnessed by the exceptional state of preservation. Located on a volcanic plateau, overlooking the sea, Herculaneum, like the other Vesuvian cities, was covered by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.C. whose products, settling, buried it until it reached a thickness of twenty-three meters. The city was brought to light during the excavations conducted by the Bourbons.
