Discover one of South Africa’s most iconic heritage sites at the Voortrekker Monument, a striking granite structure that stands proudly atop a hill in Pretoria. Built to honor the Voortrekkers—pioneers who embarked on the Great Trek during the 1830s and 1840s—this national monument offers visitors a deep dive into the country’s early settler history, culture, and architectural grandeur.
Step inside to admire the Hall of Heroes, featuring an epic marble frieze that tells the story of the Great Trek through 27 intricately carved panels. At the heart of the monument lies the Cenotaph, dramatically illuminated each year by a shaft of sunlight on December 16th—an unforgettable moment symbolizing national pride and unity.

Kultur Kruger Museum
Travel back in time with a visit to the Paul Kruger Museum, located in the heart of Pretoria. This well-preserved heritage site offers a unique glimpse into the personal life and legacy of Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger, the former president of the South African Republic and one of the most influential figures in the country’s 19th-century history.
The museum is housed in Kruger’s original residence, built in 1884, and still features the authentic furnishings, décor, and personal belongings of the Kruger family. Visitors can explore the modest Victorian-era home, complete with a traditional stoep (veranda), giving insight into both the man and the time he lived in.
The museum complex also includes several historical buildings and exhibits that showcase Kruger’s political career, his role in the Anglo-Boer Wars, and his leadership during a formative period in South African history. Outside, visitors can view statues, vintage wagons, and even Kruger’s personal carriage.

Visit the Union Buildings, the official seat of the South African government and a powerful symbol of unity, history, and national pride. Perched on Meintjeskop in Pretoria, this architectural masterpiece offers stunning panoramic views, beautifully manicured gardens, and a deep connection to the country’s journey toward democracy.
Designed by Sir Herbert Baker and completed in 1913, the Union Buildings house the offices of the President of South Africa and are an architectural marvel of sandstone arches, columns, and domes. The site played a central role in South African history, most notably as the location where Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as the country’s first democratically elected president in 1994.

Kirchplatz
Explore the rich heritage and timeless charm of Church Square, the historic center of Pretoria and one of South Africa’s most iconic public spaces. Surrounded by impressive 19th and early 20th-century architecture, this vibrant square tells the story of the city’s political, judicial, and social evolution.
At the heart of the square stands the statue of Paul Kruger, former president of the South African Republic, flanked by bronze sculptures of Boer soldiers—a powerful tribute to the country’s past. The square gets its name from the Dutch Reformed Church that once stood at its center, a gathering place for early settlers.
Church Square is framed by some of Pretoria’s most notable buildings, including:
The Palace of Justice, where Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid leaders were famously tried during the Rivonia Trial,
The Old Capitol Theatre, and
The Old Raadsaal (Council Hall), a grand red-brick structure rich in history.
