Pyramids of Giza
The Great Sphinx of Giza is one of the most iconic monuments in Egypt and the world. It’s a limestone statue with the body of a lion and the head of a man, believed to represent Pharaoh Khafre (builder of the second pyramid at Giza).
The Sphinx is about 73 meters long and 20 meters high, making it the largest monolithic statue from the ancient world.
It faces directly east, toward the rising sun, and was seen as a powerful guardian of the Giza Plateau.
The statue is more than 4,500 years old (dating back to around 2500 BC).
The missing nose and beard are famous mysteries—most historians believe they were destroyed in later periods.
